Quite often I am asked if you can see whales from the house and my answer has always been …
“well sure, they are out there, I was down at the light house and saw them from there one time. ”
This morning while speaking to my father on the phone and staring out into the vast sea I saw the blow of what I assume was a humpback whale. Again and again I saw the whale, or whales perhaps blow as the came up for air. Let is be noted that today, Sept 28th 2018, I can now truthfully respond
“Yes you can see whales out there, I have seen them through those windows with my very own eyes”.
Having been on the west coast for nearly twenty years I have seen Orca’s and Humpbacks whales many times. The trick to seeing whales on the west coast of Vancouver Island is quite simple and here it is.
You have to be watching, you have to be glassing the water and being out in a boat helps. If I was not deep into a conversation with my dad, staring out into the ocean I would have missed them. I guess that is why it is called whale watching and why a fishing charter can be fun for the whole family. I think I have seen whales on just about every charter I have been. If you spend the day in the cold deep blue where the fish hunt with multiple eyes on the water, you are at great odds to see a Cetacea.
